MCA: Covid-19 update (May 22/20)

*PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE IN ITS ENTIRETY *

Friday, May 22, 2020

Thank you to all our affiliated clubs (25 across Manitoba) who are cautiously re-engaging in a number of activities while continuing to follow the 2 metre required physical distance protocol. Club rides, bike bingos, solo scavenger hunts, virtual competitions, and trail maintenance/development are just some of the activities that are progressively moving forward across the Province.

The impact of our membership to cycling in our province is immeasurable. Individuals looking to help support the efforts of our clubs and find some like-minded individuals who enjoy riding and improving their cycling knowledge and skills can find a list of clubs and contact information (Here).

If you are interested in starting a new club please contact the MCA at 204-925-5686. Finally, you can find additional information on MCA membership benefits (Here).

Return to cycling activities:

PHASE ONE

As announced last week, our clubs are starting to resume activities within the parameters outlined in the Province of Manitoba health and safety guidelines. The province has announced that groups of up to 50 are now allowed to participate in outdoor activities, as long as the 2 metre physical distancing requirement is still maintained.

Our core insurance coverage for club activities is valid as long as the activities are approved by the MCA in advance of them taking place, and they are posted to the club’s website. Please note that there are Covid related exceptions on insurability as attached below.

Please respect the guidelines and protocols provided and proceed with caution and care. We have revised club ride protocols to include the increase in group size and have provided further information on insurance exclusions in the attached information below.

  • Revised Adult Club Ride Protocol (Here)
    Coronavirus Absolute Insurance Exclusion (Here)

  • Kids of Mud clubs reps that are interested in proceeding with programming and activities are asked to contact Cara Gillis.
  • The MCA is working on a new solo competition for members which will be released soon (stay tuned to mbcycling.ca for more details).
  • All Race protocols will now have to be submitted and approved by the Province of Manitoba before we can proceed.
  • We are working on race protocols for time trials (road & MTB).  Please contact us if you have a new idea or way to modify other events given our current restrictions.

Update on Bison Butte Legacy: Bison Butte is a series of legacy mountain bikes trails that were developed for the 2017 Canada Summer Games, located between FortWhyte Alive and Ikea, in the city of Winnipeg.  The maintenance of these trails are a volunteer effort. Any expenses incurred at this location are managed through a portion of the annual membership dollars received by the Manitoba Cycling Association. This year has been particularly challenging, however, with the support of community volunteers (Wayne Bishop, Alex Man, and the provincial cycling team athletes and parents) we have been able to complete repairs and get the trails back in shape for public use. Thank you to everyone who came together this week to help with this effort!
