Bison Butte Recreational Trails, located on the northern portion of FortWhyte Alive in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a multi-purpose trail system developed as a legacy venue for the 2017 Canada Summer Games mountain biking competition. These trails cater to various recreational activities and skill levels.
Trail Use Reminder: Protect Bison Butte! To preserve the trails and ensure a great riding experience for everyone, please avoid using the Bison Butte Trails when they are wet or muddy. Riding in these conditions causes damage, erosion, and longer recovery times for the trails.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The Bison Butte Committee, under the guidance of the Manitoba Cycling Association, plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing Bison Butte. Their responsibilities include trail maintenance, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. The committee leads volunteer initiatives, applies for grants, and ensures the site remains a well-managed recreational space. They also oversee public engagement through social media and surveys to guide future improvements.
Thank you to the Bison Butte Committee Members:
In 2025, the MCA is looking for two new members to join the committee team and contribute to the ongoing growth and stewardship of this valued mountain biking destination. If you are interested in joing the team please contact Twila Cruickshank.
Manitoba Cycling has partnered with the National Sport Trust Fund (NSTF) to accept donations and provide tax receipts for projects that support cycling development in Manitoba. The NSTF, managed by Sport Manitoba, allows donors to contribute to amateur sport initiatives while receiving tax receipts for donations of $20 or more.
Donations can be directed toward specific cycling programs, including Bison Butte, the mountain bike legacy project of the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Contributions help fund ongoing trail maintenance, ensuring this multi-use, year-round facility remains accessible to the public.
The Manitoba Cycling Association’s (MCA) Bison Butte Committee works to manage the Bison Butte trails with the shared interests of mountain bikers, landowners and other trail users in mind. As part of this initiative, the Committee launched a short survey in May 2024 to hear from trail users and the broader community about their experiences using the Bison Butte trails and how they can be made even better.
