Over 700 young Manitoba athletes paraded onto the field at Steinbach Regional Secondary School Sunday night to mark the opening of the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.

Former Manitoba Games ringette athlete, Sam Renooy, helped Eastman athletes light the torch to officially begin the competition.

Sport Manitoba Interim CEO Laurel Read said Renooy represents the many successful athletes who emerge from the games. Renooy, a two-time Manitoba Games athlete, went on to become a Canada Games gold medalist and world champion.

The games, which run from Aug. 7-13, feature 1700 athletes, coaches and managers participating in 12 different sports.

Sport Manitoba says it’s the province’s largest ongoing multi-sport event. The games are held every two years and alternate between summer and winter sports events.

Virden, Manitoba was announced as the host of the next Power Smart Winter Games in 2018.
