Two weeks prior to the scheduled mountain bike race in Pinawa it was looking very doubtful if Mother Nature was going to allow the Whiteshell Cycling Club (WCC) to host anything resembling a mountain bike race. After a week of warm dry weather the WCC decided to go ahead with the race. That gave our club only one week to get the trails “race ready”. Thanks to a dedicated and ambitious group of parents from our club we managed to pull it off.
Race day started with the U7’s and U9’s at the Devonshire Park. Just days before the race it literally looked like a war zone on the course with deadfall and up rooted trees strewn about. Although it was cloudy and cool in the morning the young riders at Devonshire Park put on a great demonstration of skill and sportsmanship. Plenty of smiles were witnessed crossing the finish line.
The next round of racing changed venues to the Pinawa Diversion Dam where the U11’s and U13’s had their chance to shine. The trails on these sections were in great condition and the times posted reflected this.
The final racers were the U15’s and older. A new 2 km section was added to the previous “adult” trail. Two spots in particular were passable only by a foot which meant that even the most skilled riders had to slog through mud past their ankles. Even though this trail was miserable in spots I never heard anything but compliments about the trails and race. I did hear some complaints about flat tires though. Our granite outcrops were merciless on many low pressure tires.
I must not forget to thank Phil Roadley and his Bikes and Beyond KOM crew for their cooperation in co-hosting this event.
