Become an MCA Cycling Coach

Coaches are the mentors and leaders of Manitoba cycling, guiding riders from their first ride to competitive racing. Volunteers play a vital role in making these programs possible, supporting athletes at every level.

Coaches complete specialized training, including the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), Respect in Sport, and background checks, to ensure safe, ethical, and effective guidance for all cyclists.

MCA Coach Pathway: From Program Volunteer to Certified Coach

Tier 1: Program Volunteer

  • Role: Assist the Kids of Mud program by supporting rides and activities.
  • Importance: Program Volunteers are essential for ensuring safety and supervision through the “Rule of Two,” and they help create a secure, positive environment that follows Safe Sport policies.
  • Impact: Program Volunteers make cycling accessible and enjoyable for young riders, helping them learn with confidence while experiencing the joy and community of the sport.

Tier 2: Ride Leader

  • Role: Lead skills sessions and club rides with support from Tier 1 volunteers.
  • Importance: Ride Leaders ensure programs are engaging, fun, and focused on skill development, teamwork, and fostering a love for cycling.
  • Impact: Ride Leaders help young athletes gain confidence and develop core cycling skills in a supportive environment.

Tier 3: Community Trained Coach

  • Role: Provide expert guidance, hold a technical coach designation, and support Tier 1 & 2 coaches.
  • Importance: Community Trained Coaches coordinate program schedules, help grow local programs, and mentor other coaches.
  • Impact: They strengthen program quality, contribute to coach development, and ensure young cyclists receive structured and skilled guidance.

Tier 4: Introduction to Competition Coach

  • Role: Prepare athletes for competitive cycling, focusing on advanced skills, race preparation, and progression from community programs to competitive pathways.
  • Importance: Tier 4 coaches provide specialized guidance for athletes ready to move beyond foundational skills, teaching technical riding, strategy, and sportsmanship.
  • Impact: These coaches mentor athletes in competitive environments, helping them reach their potential while maintaining a safe and positive atmosphere.

HopOn Certified

  • Role: Deliver the nationally recognized HopOn curriculum in community organizations and programs. HopOn Certified coaches introduce cycling to youth through fun, skill-based activities that build safety, confidence, and enjoyment of the sport.

  • Importance: HopOn coaches help grow the local club system and strengthen the youth cycling pathway. By introducing young riders to foundational skills and the broader cycling experience, they create a clear pathway for participants to progress into programs like Kids of Mud and beyond.

  • Opportunities: HopOn certification equips coaches with additional skills and provides opportunities to engage in community outreach with the Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA). Certified coaches gain experience in program delivery, mentorship, and youth engagement, all while supporting the development of the local club network.

  • Impact: HopOn coaches are key contributors to the growth of youth cycling. They inspire the next generation of riders, foster inclusive and engaging entry points into the sport, and help build a stronger, more connected club system.
