Local Cyclist Arvid Loewen attempts to set Guinness World Record

Email to the MCA from Josh Ruby (son-in-law)

My name is Josh Ruby and I’m a local cyclist here in Winnipeg. I’ve dabbled a little in road racing and triathlon in the last few years. I realize this is a “cold-call” email but I wanted to try to draw a little bit of attention from the Winnipeg cycling community about something my father-in-law Arvid Loewen is doing this summer – right now. He’s attempting to set a Guinness World record for the farthest cycling in one month (30 days). The record was last set by a fellow from the UK (11,315km) in 2017. How about attempting to break that record by doing laps of North Henderson for 30 days?

Arvid is a local cyclist and has participated in several ultra marathon cycling events in the last 20 years. He’s completed RAAM twice, completed Paris-Brest-Paris and finished many other sanctioned races and events. He rode with the Manitoba Randonneurs a fair bit in the late 90’s. In the last 10 years or so he’s started to organize his own ultra cycling rides to fund raise for an orphanage in Kenya. Among other crazy long rides he’s done he currently holds the Guinness World Record for Fastest Crossing of Canada by bike – he went from Vancouver city center to Halifax city center (6055km) in 13days, 6 hours, and 13 min. I was part of the support crew for that ride and got to tour Canada by car – at the speed of a cyclist.

So from July 1st to July 30th Arvid is attempting to break the 30 day cycling distance record by doing laps each day on a circuit on North Henderson from Hoddinot up to about the Half Moon and back. He’s sleeping each night at a place on Henderson and then getting up the next morning again at 4am to start again. He has a crew always sitting to verify his laps in person (required by Guinness) about 5km south of Lockport on the east side of the road, they are more than glad to chat with anyone who stops by . -His goal is 14-15 laps of this Henderson route per day (about 380-405km), in about 15+ hr of cycling time.

I (Josh) helped get Arvid set up on Strava for the first time this spring and got him going with a GPS computer.I am simply sending out this email because I think what my father-in-law is doing is pretty cool. I think it would be great if he managed to amass a lot of followers on Strava – and for those to do so it will be neat to see someone post 400km/day rides for all of July. You can’t say that happens very often on North Henderson! It is inspiring to say the least 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to read this long description, hopefully it wasn’t bothersome or off putting. -Josh Ruby in N.K.
