Hosting of the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Manitoba

– Sport Manitoba has been asked by the Province to assist in forming a bid team to look at options for hosting the 2017 Canada Games in Manitoba.

“The Canada Games is an extraordinary event that plays an important role in developing Manitoba’s athletes and coaches, while showcasing our province to the country,” said Jeff Hnatiuk President & CEO for Sport Manitoba.

An initial team of community representatives has been put together to begin discussions with potential partners and stakeholders to build a Bid Proposal.

The bid team consists of:

Mariette Mulaire – President & CEO, World Trade Centre Winnipeg

Hubert Mesman– Former President & CEO, Travel Manitoba

Terry Welsh – Former Executive Director, Tourism Secretariat – Province of Manitoba

Mike Benson – Director, Sport Secretariat – Province of Manitoba

Jeff Hnatiuk – President & CEO, Sport Manitoba

The bid team anticipates a bid proposal process that will culminate with a bid to the Canada Games Council in the Spring of 2013.

The Canada Games are the country’s largest multi-sport national event occurring ever two years rotating between summer and winter events. Since the first Canada Games was held in 1967, over 100,000 athletes have competed in the Games while another
100,000 coaches, officials, and volunteers have contributed to the planning and staging activities. Every year, countless more join in supporting this wonderful celebration of youth, sport, culture, and community. 2017 will mark the Canada Games’ 50th Anniversary as Canada’s premier celebration of amateur sport.

Sport Manitoba is a not for profit organization and the lead planning, programming and funding agency for the development of amateur sport in Manitoba. Located in the Sport for Life Centre, Sport Manitoba partners with over 100 organizations to deliver
sport in our province and is responsible for programs including the Power Smart Manitoba Games, Coaching Manitoba, Team Manitoba, Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame & Museum, and KidSport. Services provided include the Sport Medicine Centre, Sport performance Centre, and Sport Resource Centre.
