The term road bicycle is used to describe bicycles built for traveling at speed on paved roads. There are many types of bicycles that are used on the roads including: BMX, recumbents, racing, touring and utility bicycles.
Dedicated road bicycles have drop handlebars and multiple gears, although there are single and fixed gear varieties. Road bikes also use narrow, high-pressure tires to decrease rolling resistance, and tend to be somewhat lighter than other types of bicycles. The major sub-categories of road bicycle racing include one day races, stage races, and time trials (individual & team), criteriums, ultra endurance racing, hill climbing events, and gravel events. There are sometimes different types of riders in road races who also specialize in specific roles (sprinters, climbers, Domestique, Puncheur, and All-rouder).
Road racing has been recognized as an Olympic sport since 1896.
Velodonnas is the first and only female cycling club in Winnipeg. Their mission is to inform, instruct and inspire female cyclists of all abilities.
To organize a Road race, please contact your Club Committee Rep and Road Director/Committee Coordinator, then head over to the Organizers section of the website for important information and resources.
The organization of road races and events depends on the work of volunteers – consider joining the Road committee and help road racing grow in Manitoba.
The committee consists of a Race Director/Committee Coordinator (MCA Board member) who chairs the Road committee and a road representative from each club in Manitoba.
The Road race calendar is established each year by the Road committee in January and posted to the MCA website in February. Events typically take place between April to August.
Want to find a group to ride with? There are dozens of clubs in the city offering a wide variety of rides and adventures.
