Simply being the first wasn’t enough for these cyclists Friday. They were also the first athletes to ride an officially sanctioned race at Blind Creek Trail.

Austin Legault from Team Central received the gold medal in the individual short track race with a time of 47:23 minutes. He was in second place for the first 20 minutes until he found the energy to pass Winnipeg Blues Auckland LeBrun, who ultimately took the silver.

Team Central also prevailed in the girls under-15 competition courtesy of Zoe Penno. She was behind Eastmans Ciel Ferguson for most of the race but pulled ahead in her last few laps. She won with a time of 50:27 minutes, just one second faster than Ferguson.

“I just said just keep going, just keep going in my head”, said Penno of the tight finish.

Ferguson said shed like to thank her coaches, volunteers and opponents for everything they did to make the day possible.

In the under-13 division, Centrals Soren Weselake cruised to a gold medal in the boys race and Winnipeg Blues Katherine Peters claimed gold in the girls race.
